What is a Hanging Bed?
A hanging bed, also called a floating bed, is basically a bed that is supported from above by ropes or chains, rather than standing on feet. They can be completely hung in the middle of a room away from walls, or instead can be attached by one side to the wall and just supported by ropes on the outside.
Advantages of a Hanging Bed
Hanging beds are not a new idea. Indeed everyone will have heard of a hammock and basically this is what hanging beds have been developed from, and have traditionally been popular in warm climates where movement and breezes can be a big plus, even at night.
You will often see hanging beds in resort huts and hotels, particularly in hot climates such as the Maldives, Indonesia and the Caribbean. In North America you will more often see hanging beds in ultra comtemporary bedrooms, particularly lofts. Indeed the advent of new materials such as extra strong cords and strands of steel have allowed minimalist variations to be designed.
If you don’t like the idea of rocking back and forth you can use rigid steel tension rods that will both hold a bed in place but also open up additional under-bed storage (without the bed legs getting in the way).
